Introduction to the department II Department Characteristics
All of the members of Department of Applied Mathematics have successfully established an image of being vigorous and vital and the teachers and students get along well on campus. They also have many outstanding performances in all aspects. The main characteristics of the department are:
1. Outstanding faculty; luxuriant research capacity
The faculty of the department is very distinguished. All of them have received doctor’s degree of famous universities domestically or abroad. Some of the professors serve as the presidents of national academies, director-generals, editors of international periodicals, and advisory committee members of National Science Council. The professors are devoted to research and are enthusiastic in teaching; they not only are active in the academic circles but also frequently provide professional services for educational and academic works. All of above makes our university to have the potential to become an academic site of strategic importance of domestic applied mathematics learning.
Since the department was founded in 2000, the rates of the professors’ projects being subsidized by National Science Council or Ministry of Education are 100%, which is very outstanding. In the recent three years (2002-2004), the numbers of projects that are recognized are 13, 20, and 16. Whether it is the total amount of projects or average number of projects per teacher, our faculty is ranked the first place of our school. The total amount of funding has reached $8,070,000 NT, $10,760,000 NT, and $10,800,000 NT, which is certainly not inferior to other prestigious domestic math departments.
2. The most advanced hardware and software facilities in research and
teaching.
The department possesses the most advanced hardware and software facilities such as high-speed servers, parallel processors, high-capacity computer clusters, e-learning and media on demand servers, web hard disk servers, high speed Internet access, complete scientific computing software, libraries, packaged software, multimedia classroom, and scientific computing lab which opens 24 hours a day. All of them are provided for research and teaching purposes.
In addition, the department also produces rich and diverse digital teaching materials, and establishes a 3A (Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime) learning environment by all kinds of e-learning systems and all kinds of synchronous and asynchronous communication tools. This encourages the students to learn actively and promotes the discussions and interactions between the students and the teachers. Besides, the students establish their knowledge by cooperative learning, and form a learning community which strides across the limit of grades and schools. The main learning websites include: the learning resources network, probability and statistics web-base learning center, scientific computing network, and media on demand.
3. Harmony among teachers and students; students perform prominently.
The faculty members of the department are fully enthusiastic in teaching and serving. Their devotion to the students is shown not only in the demands for schoolwork; they are also devoted to the guidance and assistance of students’ lives. The teachers play the roles of instructors and friends; the relationship between the teachers and students is very harmonious, and forms a warm and unique department philosophy.
The students of the department have strong activity and unity. They have had the honor to win many athletic awards and also perform outstandingly in school work. Among the 32 graduates of 2004, 26 of them entered the domestic graduate schools and majored in applied mathematics, statistics, information technology, electronic engineering, industrial engineering, epidemiology, and information management. Students of the department are sure to become the top leaders in all trades and professions in the future.
