General Classroom

Classrooms are equipped with central air-conditioning systems, projectors, amplifiers, and internet access to provide students with a comfort and accessible learning environment.

Scientific Computing Lab

There are two labs for Scientific Computing to support both Windows and Linux operating systems, one for each. Basic structures for the lab include raised floors, high-speed Local Area Network, uninterruptible power system, central air-conditioning system, and security access system. The Scientific Computing Labs are available for faculty and students of the department 24 hours a day. The effective management of the labs truly provides a convenient environment for both teaching and research.

Multimedia Classroom

The department has a multimedia classroom with wireless internet access, wireless projectors, dual-band wireless microphone system, large motorized projector screens, hidden amplification system, multimedia computers, visualizers, DVD players, teleconferencing and live broadcasting/recording equipments.

Computing Resources

Backed by Ministry of Education, the “Implementation Plan of e-Learning Multimedia to Improve Basic Mathematics for Colleges ” has been underway for the last 4 years. Since January of 2003, the department has also carried out the “Basic Science Education Improvement Plan: Computational Science and Mathematics”. Clearly, the two plans will drastically improve teaching facilities and qualities and allow the department to stay on competitive edge. An excellent performance is proven by the outcome of “Computational Science and Mathematics Educations Improvement Program initiated by Ministry of Education”. This program not only received the largest budget but was also one of the top 2 rated achievements among 17 competing programs. As a result, it was awarded by the Ministry of Education.

The hardware list includes PC stations, high-speed servers, parallel servers (PC clusters), high-throughput clusters, Giga-bit speed Internet access, wireless Internet access, web hard disk servers, file backup servers, Tablet PCs, e-learning and media on demand servers, laser printers, and scanners.

The software list consists of scientific computing software, mathematics libraries, packaged software, programming compilers, integrated development environment with debuggers. Both hardware and software resources are designed to run on client-server platforms. Thus, all computing resources are accessible to students and highly competitive among prestigious universities in international research institutions.

In order to stay uninterruptible, all computing resources are operated and maintained by technical specialists. The software upgrades are also conducted by the specialists.

E-Learning

Furthermore, the department continues to develop multiple web-based learning systems. The examples are the learning resources network, probability and statistics web-based learning center, scientific computing network, scientific computing forum, multimedia implementation plan, media on demand (including live recordings for academic speeches, seminars, and classrooms), personal web pages and file server, classroom network broadcasting system, web-based collaborative learning system (equipped with functions like file exchange, real-time and non real-time multimedia forums). The aforementioned systems are designed to support learning and improve learning efficiency using advanced computing and e-learning equipment.

Library

National University of Kaohsiung is empowered by its innovative Library and Information Science building with centralized paper-based and digital library resources. The technical library resources for the department include 15,825 books in Chinese, 10,110 books in foreign languages, and 234 foreign periodicals. In addition, the department has been purchasing increasingly more popular technical books and periodicals in probability and statistics, combinational mathematics, and scientific computing. Past editions are also being acquired.
